City of Hoschton
In 1878 a railroad was organized to run from Gainesville to Jefferson and Athens. Soon afterwards subscriptions were solicited and stock sold to connect this railroad at Belmont and run to Monroe.
In 1880 R.A. and J.R. Hosch decided to start a town. They had the town surveyed and a sale of lots was held on December 21, 1881 at a location where the second Hoschton School was built. The Hosch Brothers bought and gave, for the use of Hoschton citizens, land for the town square, streets, right of way for the railroad, a church, school, Rockwell Lodge No. 191, Fand A.M., and a cemetery. In 1882, J.C. Saye, assisted by J.R. and R.A. Hosch surveyed and laid the town site. The town was incorporated in 1891 and the charter was signed by the governor, Hon. William J. Northern. The first Mayor elected was George Adams, and the first councilmen elected were: J.W. Darby, John Smith, Dr. L.C. Allen, John Chestnut, and C.P. Garrison.
